Learning without Teaching: Experiments in Architectural Knowledge
Saturday, 16 October 2010, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, a one-day ymposium organized on the occasion of the start of the Berlage Institute’s twentieth year. The symposium will explore the state of knowledge exchange between the educational and professional contexts in architecture. Considering the role of the multidisciplinary design laboratory as a point of interchange, leading architects, educators, critics, and scholars will discuss key issues concerning the production and utilization of architectural knowledge. Some of the major questions facing those practicing the exchange of architectural knowledge include: What is the present state of architectural discourse, education, and the position of the architect in society? What are the contemporary models of architectural research and the problematics of education in a globalized field? What is the role of the architect as a public intellectual? Participants will include Wiel Arets, George Baird, Jean-Louis Cohen, Kenneth Frampton, Herman Hertzberger, Michael Speaks, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, and Elia Zenghelis. They will address these questions and discuss topics such as Dutch architecture culture from an international perspective, different platforms for the transfer of architectural knowledge, and the socio-political motivations of architecture today. The symposium is the inaugural event in a yearlong program of public events, publications, and other activities organized to celebrate the Berlage Institute’s ongoing commitment to preparing the next generation of architects to engage in the twenty-first century world.
