The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, the Institut Français d’Architecture (Paris), The Architecture Foundation (London), the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut (Rotterdam), the Architekturzentrum Wien (Vienna) and the Museum of Finnish Architecture (Helsinki) have called for entries for the Fourth European Prize for Urban Public Space, which is to be awarded in June 2008 in Barcelona. Why public space?_ Given the reductionism and programmatic simplicity of some of the large-scale urban projects implemented in Europe in recent years, and the risks of homogenisation and impoverishment of the urban landscape, we believe that promoting public space and making known the diversity of functions it can embrace and its intense, rich and plural character, is an ideal way of stimulating urban projects that aim to reinvent and enhance the structural role that public space has always played in European cities. Competition_ The spirit of the Prize is to recognise, highlight and make known the most significant projects of creating or redesigning public space in Europe, which have been completed in 2006 and 2007. This is an honorary Prize and is awarded jointly to the institution that has initiated the project and the author/s of the work. | The winning projects, the finalists and a selection of the best projects that have presented for the Prize will subsequently form part of the European Archive of Urban Public Space, a collection of the most outstanding interventions that have been presented for the Prize since it was first awarded.
