‘Antidote’ - Bacaci Sjenki/Shadow Casters - “Man_is_Space: Vitic_Dances”
At 6pm, the Otok Gallery, Lazareti, Frana Supila 8, Dubrovnik, in the frame of the programme ‘Antidote’ by Art radionica Lazareti, we invite you to the lecture and the presentation of the project “Man_is_Space: Vitic_Dances” (Boris Bakal, Katarina Pejovic). “Man_is_Space: Vitic_Dances” began four years ago as an investigation of the reasons why a 10-storey condominium building in Laginjina street 9 in Zagreb by the architect Ivo Vitic – a masterpiece of Modernistic architecture of the late 50’s and a declared Cultural Monument under the City Municipality protection - is in a ghastly deteriorating state, a danger for its 270 inhabitants, while its extraordinariness and beauty are practically indiscernible. Yet when the authors found an office space in the building and thus began sharing the everyday life with the building and its tenants, the investigation gained entirely new dimensions. The immersion into the history of the building and the people, along with learning about their present hardship (that comes out not only of the building’s state but also out of the disturbed relations in this micro-community) as well as their incompetence in the role of the building’s co-owners - all of this contributed to making the project grow into a complex interdisciplinary endeavour that combines permanent artistic interventions and programmes in and around the building with consistent social engagement as well as working on the media and public visibility of the issue. The immediate goal of this endeavour is a two-fold restoration: that of the building but also of the community in it. On the other hand, with its motley crew of different classes, generations, professions, interests and aspirations, the building told the story of the decline of the notion and practice of solidarity from the times of Socialism up to today’s life on the dreary lane of Transition – a story that is crucial for understanding the dynamics of transformation of the Croatian society. In the four past years, the project has already brought about some significant changes in the community of Laginjina street 9 but also in the wider public that has become more aware of the issues of the restoration of cultural monuments of Modernism. As the fruit of the engagement of the tenants, the restoration works on the building are due to begin this year. This will mark at once the end of the project “Man is Space: Vitic_Dances” | **[Bacaci Sjenki (Shadow Casters) is an artistic and production platform dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration, creation and reflection, exploring and searching for new creative languages, especially in the field of Urban and Public Art and New Media - questioning the existing concepts of individual and collective identities, dealing with all forms of social, political and cultural intolerance and segregation and encouraging the debate on the nature and contradictions of the on-going globalization process].
