The Mayor and Alderman of Rotterdam have pronounced 2007 as the city’s Year of Architecture. The aim of this theme year is to attract visitors to the city and to raise the national and international profile of the city’s architectural qualities. Rotterdam 2007 City of Architecture will be Rotterdam’s fifth theme year in close succession. Following Euro 2000, the city has celebrated European Cultural Capital 2001, Waterlife 2003 and Sports Year 2005. The past theme years have attracted many visitors to the city and have had substantial commercial spin-offs. The programme for Rotterdam 2007 City of Architecture is now at the planning stage. One thing is already certain: Rotterdam’s buildings of outstanding architectural quality will be highlighted in a striking way. Besides the special events to be organized, the Netherlands Architecture Institute will put on some major exhibitions as well as the annual events “Architecture Day” and “Rotterdam Bouwt”. Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Rotterdam (OBR) is devising the plan of action and organizing sponsoring for the theme year. Rotterdam Festivals is responsible for realization of the plans, and Rotterdam Marketing is undertaking the marketing and communications.
